This news article from Lesotho talks about how former Miss Vodacom PC Refiloe Pheku beats all other contestents in the Miss Vitality 2013 beauty pageant and one the contest. Miss Vitality is awarded to the contestant in the Miss Million Dollar pageant who looks the healthiest out of all the competition. This was a big win for Lesotho even though Pheku did not win the Miss Million Dollar pageant, winning the Miss Vitality contest was a very big deal.
This cultural activity is a big deal in Southern Africa. Miss Million Dollar is a huge pageant and so is Miss Vitality. For a representative from Lesotho to win this is also a big deal. This pageant was very good, unlike many other pageants around the world, because prizes were awarded to women based not only on how "pretty" they are, but how well they take care of their bodies, how healthy they are, and how they plan to take on the world and do good for their country.
This article ties in very well to the culture of Lesotho. Lesotho is a very poor country and many of the people in it are malnourished. This pageant brings some fun and distracts the people of Lesotho from the problems back home. It gives them someone to cheer for, someone they can relate to who is out there in the world doing big things. Miss Vitality is also a great prize as it is given to the healthiest contestant in the Miss Million Dollar, and for Lesotho to win this is a very big deal. It is most often given to white women, but Lesotho was able to break this pattern by being the healthiest, best representative for her country.
